Australian audio engineer and musician India Hooi is a third-year Audio/Video fellow at the New World Symphony. She specializes in recording and mixing classical, folk, acoustic and mixed-genre music. She has also worked on a broad range of other projects including audio for soundtracks, podcasts, audiobooks, documentaries and video games.
India has worked with numerous classical musicians in Australia, Europe and North America to record and produce albums, concert recordings, videos and livestreams. Recording projects have included the Copenhagen Philharmonic in Denmark, Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and the Chinese traditional music organization Music Confucius Institute. Over the summer of 2024 she worked as a senior audio engineer at Aspen Music Festival, and in 2023 she spent a week assisting the audio team at Berlin Philharmonic. India is a member of the Audio Engineering Society (AES), a regular attendee at AES Conventions, and a blog writer for Soundgirls.
India completed her master of music degree in Tonmeister (sound production) at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, and undertook an audio engineering practicum at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Canada. She also holds a bachelor of music degree in classical piano from the Elder Conservatorium at the University of Adelaide, Australia.
In addition to audio engineering, India loves exploring diverse musical passions. She is singer and multi-instrumentalist with jazz/musical comedy duo Indigo, and previously with prog-rock band Psychic Equalizer. In 2024 India premiered four compositions at NWS, and she also enjoys songwriting and improvisation. An experienced choral singer, she founded the BLUE Choir at New World Symphony and the DKDM Voices student choir (Denmark), and has also performed with the Camerata Coral de la Universidad de Cantabria (Spain), renaissance choir Adamar (Spain) and the Elder Conservatorium Chorale (Australia). India enjoys learning musical instruments and dances from around the world, hiking and travelling.
